Everyone Is An Expert

Hi...

I know I've been 'missing in action' for a couple of days. Lots going on personally... I have never known so many people with major health issue as I know this winter! Here's lots of love, light and energy going out to any and all who can use the boost!

Today's post will be brief. I just want to share a wonderful resource with you.

It's a 32 page PDF written by Seth Godin, the creator of Squidoo (and so much more)

Everyone Is An Expert

Seth's intro reads as follows:

This book is for anyone who wants more online traffic, more revenue, more followers, more attention, more interest, more donations or more influence.

The paradox, of course, is that the best way to get all these things is by delivering less.

This is a book about focus and meaning. Feel free to share it.

Give it a read... it goes a long way toward explaining Squidoo!

Have an amazing... and healthy, weekend!

A 'finding hot niches' p.s.

I'm not really writing about 'finding hot niches' today but since Jackie brought it up I want to add one place not included on her list. There is a good possibility many will disagree with me but I want to suggest you look for 'hot niche' ideas by paying attention to television ads.

Yes! You heard me correctly. ;-) And no... I'm not suggesting you should compete with the 'big guys' who can afford TV advertising rates. But think about it...

They've spent tons of money doing the research to find out what people are looking for (or, at the very least they've spent tons of money deciding to convince us we're looking for certain solutions. Heck...until pharmaceutical companies decided to advertise directly to the consumer I just never knew there were quite so many things that could go haywire!)

So, pay attention to what are presumably people's concerns and then zero in on a little subset of that group of people with a product or service that might serve them around the issue.

Okay... got that out of my system. ;-)

I was reading an ebook about building Squidoo lenses and it was talking about getting your lens indexed in search engines. According to this 'expert' it is better to leave links off of your squidoo lens for the first 3 or so days and simply focus on content that uses your keywords. That way, you'll get the best indexing.

Now...I have no idea if this is true or not but I decided that I'd give it a day or two before I included any direct links. Today I did add more content AND one link to my Cards Build Business lens. I will confess to have some doubts about the veracity of this information because I believe it was the same source that suggested simply writing your intro and adding a couple of 'Text modules' to start your lens out.

The thing is... it may simply be outdated information because Squidoo now requires a minimum of 4 modules before even they will add your lens to their files. That was set up in order to discourage those people who were simply using up space over at Squidoo by slapping up a quick, minimal lens simply to ride on the coattails of the highly ranking squidoo pages. That kind of stuff just hurts everybody so I'm very pleased Squidoo responded by setting up some parameter that might help lenses be a synonym for 'quality content'!

What I ended up doing when I started the lens on January 1 was writing the Intro, the two text modules AND I simply added a Guestbook. If you drop by a lens that offers a guest book please take a moment to leave a message... giving feedback is always a valuable exchange and if you happen to be logged in to Squidoo at the time it provides you with a link back to your name and your lenses so it's really a win-win to sign guestbooks!

Yesterday I went in to edit the lens by adding a fun little widget called "Did you Know?" It allows you to rotate through a series of random facts and I really like things that are interactive plus it was a nice fit for my subject matter.

I also added a poll and a couple of new tags. I have learned that the search engines, Google and Yahoo for instance, seem to like a site that is frequently updated. To add something new a few times a week is actually frequent enough... and this can be as small and simple as adding a new tag or two. But when I'm still in the active building phase of a lens I'll usually add at least one section daily.

Today I added another text module which resulted in me having some new tags to add to the lens also. Feel free to hop over there and check out my progress... and hey, while you're there you could leave a note in my guestbook and/or give me a star rating... I haven't yet promoted this lense but I intend to do some of that... tomorrow!

C'ya then...

Marketing with SQUIDOO.com

YES! We touched on squidoo.com when first starting the 30 Day Marketing Experiment as it is a part of the Bum Marketing Method. And because SQUIDOO.com is such a valuable resource it's well worth taking a deeper look at all that is offered here at NO COST to you!

Squidoo is a fabulous place for you to define a niche that YOU feel passionate about while providing a platform that helps drive traffic your way.

My intentions this month are:

  • To share tips and tricks that make setting up a squidoo lens easy and effective for you
  • To create at least two new lenses of my own and to expand on current lenses
  • To demonstrate how squidoo can help brand your business on the 'net
  • To give you step-by-step instructions on how to set up Search Engine Optimized pages within Squidoo at absolutely no cost to you
  • And to continue to sharing what I learn as I learn it!
2008 Promises to be a very HAPPY and VERY PROFITABLE NEW YEAR!!!
Give us some feedback and let us know what YOU would like to know and what you would like us to try. The whole point of experimenting is to try something different... so don't hold back!!!

Thanks! I appreciate you,

Day 5 ~ Mary K

Hooray!!!! Congratulations to Jackie!!!

This has been such a GREAT week! ;-) Much learning and much accomplished...FUN!

I find myself wondering how changing the type of product or service I choose to market will impact the 30 Day Marketing Experiment. Since I'm approaching this from the perspective that it's a test of the 'method' and should, theoretically work regardless of the product, I feel very open to changing focus for next week.

This week I've been focusing on a niche I haven't really spent any time marketing to before... things for children/child development. It's an area I'm very comfortable and familiar with so I feel the passion, I just haven't done any marketing in this area before. Although I didn't earn anything yet... I'll bet it's on it's way!!! ;-)

So... here's todays report:

Created a new Squidoo Lens called Homemade Kits for Kids
This took 1.5 hours. I'm getting quicker!!

Blog post - 15 min

Pinged and bookmarked both - 15 minutes

Once again I didn't fit everything in the two hour time but overall, I'm feeling great!

Have a fabulous and prosperous weekend...
I so appreciate you,

Day 3 ~ Mary K

Alrighty.... It was an interesting day this day 3. I think I was expecting too much of myself and found myself needing to re-center over and over again. Some days are just wonky that way!

Ommmmmmmmmmmm
I'm doing a better job with my time but lost close to an hour today around placing an ad. I haven't personally seen great results from running classified ads of any kind online (although I know people who have great results from Craigslist) but I had hear that there is one classified ad place that Google seems to like.

Well, it's called UsFreeAds but I can tell you, after 50 minutes of reading and researching the site, for what I'm up to the truly 'free' ads are virtually useless! Don't want to belabor the point but I'm really invested in seeing if cash can be generated by anybody just using FREE tools so I couldn't even place the ad!

The good news is the AD itself only took about 5 minutes because I was able to lift copy already in place about the product.

I'm already tempted to change course about the particular product line I'm promoting for this week but I had decided to focus on one line or 'category' of products for at least a week so I'll stay the course!

The way the day shaped up around the 30 Day Marketing Experiment was as follows:

  • Writing and submitting AD - approx. 1 hour (with no ad actually submitted - blech!)
  • Added a section to yesterdays Squidoo Lens and promoted it - 1 hour (well spent, rank already rising which often indicates a higher position in search engines meaning more eyeballs searching on my keywords are likely to find my lens and (ideally) buy my stuff! ;-)
  • Posted to Blog - approx 1 hour (discovered a new, at least to me, thing called 'video units' that allow you to set up a customized YouTube screen on a blog or website that is responsive to your keywords. This means the videos streaming to your site will always be fresh and changing and theoretically on topic. Pretty cool! Have to admit, I got a bit mesmerized watching the different videos right on my own blog. Some might call that a time waster? ;-))
Again... I didn't write or submit an article. I am applauding that I took the time to check out the classified ad thing. I don't have the energy desired around posting classifieds so I can drop that element all together and tomorrow focus on writing and submitting an article or two!

I'm also realizing (primarily from reading Jackie's posts, LOL) that it will be more valuable for me to get up early and sit down for a couple of hours and get the tasks done. I'm excited about this now because I have more clarity about the specifics of the tasks I'll be doing. The way I've approached things these first three days was that I would do a little bit, then something would come up to pull me away or I discovered I had to do some exploring in order to use the tool I was working with... and meanwhile, the fact I wasn't reaching completion with the task was weighing on my mind.

This had the effect of making me feel as though I was putting a LOT more time on all of this than the actual measure indicates. It also got in the way of me completing some other things that I enjoy spending time with and/or have committed to completing. By being clear about the steps to take I should be able to eliminate that 'hangover' feeling that drained my energy today. ;-)

I'm gonna go take an alka seltzer, c'ya ====> ;-)
